In 1939, when I migrated from Beijing to Singapore, I started with one-fifth of a rented shop space in Orchard Road selling $300 worth of arts and crafts which I had brought along with me. Then opportunity struck and I sold sporting goods and handicrafts from various Chinese provinces. Through hard work and some good luck my business expanded to three shops in Singapore and one shop in Kuala Lumpur during the late 1960s.
Eventually, classic rosewood furniture became so popular that we started the first rosewood factory in Singapore at Kallang Pudding Road and over thirty Shanghainese craftsmen were employed to meet the demand in the small 4, 000 sq ft factory known as Singapore Handicrafts Centre in 1965. As business grew and flourished during early 1980, we built our very own 6-storey building at Eunos Avenue 7 having a total of 70, 000 sq ft. It is in this building that our main showroom, office, factory and warehouse are presently centralised.
To cope with the high demand of rosewood furniture and to remain competitive, we relocated our factory and set up a joint-venture factory in Shenzhen, China with over 600 craftsmen to manufacture rosewood, blackwood, Zitan and Jichi furniture for export to North America, United Kingdom, Europe, Japan, Middle East and Asia. We also represent Nigensha, Japan to market quality museum reproduction paintings from National Palace Museum, Taipei, Shanghai and Liaoning Museums in China. Our business now includes providing exclusive quality furnishings to suit the lifestyle in Singapore. We are also the agent of Junco and Pine & Crane brands for handknotted pure Tianjin wool carpets and handknotted pure Shanghai silk carpets respectively.
